A Court Of Wings And Ruin Cover Reveal!

A Court Of Wings And Ruin Cover Reveal!

Hey bookworms, I’m just here with a short post today. I don’t know if you’ve seen but the cover for A Court Of Wings And Ruin has been released!

It’s gorgeous isn’t it? The forest green is so pretty, and her dress, ahhhh. I love it so much. It’ll look so pretty next to the first two books on my shelf. 😉 I cannot wait to have this 648 page beauty on my shelf.

I think before it comes out in May (which is only three months away!) I’ll have to refresh on ACOMAF because I don’t quite remember all the little details oops. I think when I got it last year I just zoomed through it too fast. I’m also just dying to see where the series goes though!

Are you excited for ACOWAR? What do you think of the cover? Let me know below!

The Thoughts Of A Hamilton Fan About Alex And Eliza: A Love Story

The Thoughts Of A Hamilton Fan About Alex And Eliza: A Love Story

I don’t know if you’ve heard, and frankly if you aren’t a Hamilton fan you probably don’t care but Melissa De La Cruz has a new book surrounding the love of young Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler coming out on April 11th 2017.

Those who read my blog regularly or follow me on goodreads or know me in real life know I am an extreme (which is a understatement) Hamilton fan. So of course hearing the news about this had some thoughts going through my head and I thought I’d share them in a post!

Here is the Goodreads synopsis for the book:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Witches of East End and The Descendants comes the love story of young Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler.

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, she can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

In the pages of Alex and Eliza, #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz brings to life the romance of young Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.

Now with just reading that I’ve got a lot of questions.

This book could either be really beautiful and what every Hamilton book nerd ever hoped for or it could crash and burn and appear in all our nightmares.

Firstly, is this being based off of real history or Hamilton: An American Musical (2015)?

Significant differences will be in store defending on which of these the book’s inspiration was drawn from. Since the Goodreads synopsis has the identical descriptive words used to describe Alex as are used in the first few lines of the musical, I’m thinking that this is going to be a musical-based book. But then more questions come to mind like: Is Angelica going to be involved? And if she is, how much? Are we going to get a Satisfied-esque scene in the book?

Also, what is the timeline of the book?

If you are a Hamilton fan you know Alex wasn’t the most loyal of husbands and with this book focusing on Alex and Eliza’s love and eventually marriage I’m just wondering if we are going to be given a visit by Miss Maria Reynolds any time while reading. I can see why they might end the book before Alexander’s scandal so it could be a nice happy ending but I personally think it wouldn’t be fair to Eliza if the Reynolds affair was left out. It would make Alex look way better than he actually was and wouldn’t show the hardships Eliza had to go through with her husband having an affair and being blackmailed.

And lastly, will my beloved characters be portrayed properly?

My biggest concern is that Alexander will be portrayed as too nice and that Eliza won’t be portrayed as caring as she was. I could write a multiple page list on why Eliza Schuyler Hamilton was the most carring human in the world (not just based off of how she’s portrayed in the musical, but her in real life) and if she isn’t given credit for that you can bet this won’t be getting a rave review.

I feel really bad for putting so much pressure on the book and setting the bar so high but depending on all of this the book could have a different ending, mood set and overall feel. Hamilton is also such a huge thing in my life and has been for about a year now that I have to be picky, if it doesn’t live up to my hopes it’ll be a bummer or it could be amazing and land itself a spot on my “Best Books Of 2017” list.

Let me know below, are you a Hamilton fan and what are your thoughts about Alex and Eliza: A Love Story?

A Percy Jackson… Musical?

A Percy Jackson… Musical?

Today on The Washington Post, Daily Mail and on Twitter by Rick Riordan himself, it was announced that on March 23, 2017 a new musical will be playing Off-Broadway called, The Lightning Thief.

Being both a book nerd and Broadway nerd, I do have to say hearing this news today at school had me a bit shocked. I feel like I should be jumping up and down screaming of excitment but I’m not?

Percy Jackson has been adapted into movies so poorly, I almost want to just take the book series and lock it into a room so no one touches or tries to adapt it again and ruin Rick’s beautiful books and world but I’m also intrigued by the musical and kind of want to see it.

The musical is written by Joe Tracz, who wrote the original Netflix series ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ and Rob Rokicki is to open at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in March. It is also said to be good for everyone ages 7 and up which I think is actually nice. With little siblings myself I know if we were to go to New York any time soon I would want to see shows of course but not everything is age appropriate for a 7 and 8 year old. The Lightning Theif seems like it would be the perfect family show to see. Tickets are also to be sold for $65-$85, ha that seems like a beautiful price compared to the price of Hamilton tickets.

We already have a Percy! Chris McCarrell, who recently played Marius in ‘Les Miserables’ on Broadway and also Nibs in ‘Peter Pan Live’.

He is super cute and looks like he could be a Percy so I’m not mad about this casting but I’m not drop dead about to stan him either.

I knew I couldn’t form too much of an opinion until I heard some of the music and then on Twitter Rick linked a video of Chris singing ‘Good Kid’, one of the songs from the show.

I don’t hate it, it’s definitely Broadway (which I’m not complaining about 😉 hahaha) but I’m still getting used to the idea of Percy Jackson as a musical… of all things. I think it’ll warm up to me when all the songs are released. Chris can also sing (obviously) and I don’t hate his voice so I am intrigued to hear the rest of the songs and find out who the rest of the cast is.

If you want to head the sneak peek of Chris singing ‘Good Kid’ click here.

Overall I’m excited but hesitant at the same time. If this is a flop I think the Percy Jackson fandom will actually give up. These books weren’t done justice when turned into movies so we can all just cross our fingers that the musical is a hit.

Let me know how you feel about this in the comments! Are you hesitant like me or all for it?

My True Love Gave To Me Book Review: Why I probably won’t be reading any more short story collections any time soon :(

My True Love Gave To Me Book Review: Why I probably won’t be reading any more short story collections any time soon :(

Title: My True Love Gave To Me

Author: Various Authors

Rating: ★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

If you love holiday stories, holiday movies, made-for-TV-holiday specials, holiday episodes of your favorite sitcoms and, especially, if you love holiday anthologies, you’re going to fall in love with My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by twelve bestselling young adult writers, edited by international bestselling author Stephanie Perkins. Whether you enjoy celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah, Winter Solstice or New Year’s there’s something here for everyone. So curl up by the fireplace and get cozy. You have twelve reasons this season to stay indoors and fall in love.

My Thoughts: (spoiler free)

Going into this book I knew I wasn’t a really big fan of short story anthologies but I thought reading it at this time of year might make me enjoy it more since its holiday themed. I even had a whole plan of reading one story every day for the twelve days leading up to Christmas but seeing as I finished it a few days ago, my plan didn’t work out too well.

The stories were definitely cute and festive I just found myself lacking interest in a lot of the plots and not being able to become invested in any of the charaters because they were so short. Honestly the only one I can remember loving without looking on my updates on goodreads is the very first one and since its the only one I can actually remember, none of the other stories stood out to me enough. By the time I was halfway through I had to almost force myself to pick up the book again to read the next story and it made me enjoy it less even though none of them were necessarily bad, I just didn’t love or feel connected to any of them, which is a bummer.

I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t love this but I did try to read the summer version of it, Summer Days and Summer Nights, in the summer and only made it to about the third or fourth story. I just have a hard time picking the book back up after reading one of the stories because it’s a whole new setting and charaters that I have to get to know, read about and let go of in only 20-30 pages. I am thinking that not enjoying both of these books is a good indication that short story collections are not my thing.

If you are a fan of short stories I do highly recommend picking this collection up because I was very Christmasy and like I said before, December is the perfect month to read it.

It’s too bad my first book of 2017 wasn’t one I loved but it’s okay, I’ve just got to move onto the next one. Do any of you have a hard time reading collections of short stories? Or is it just me hahaha. If you’ve read My True Love Gave To Me, what did you think of it and which story was your favourite?

My Most Anticipated 2017 Releases!

My Most Anticipated 2017 Releases!

2017 has begun and with a new year comes new books of course! Today I’m going to share with you my most anticipated releases of 2017… And there are more than I thought so let’s just get into the books.

Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken

Release Date: January 3rd 2017

Technically I’m not anticipating this one anymore because it’s already out and I have it but the finale to the Passenger duology is finally here! And by finally I mean I just read Passenger like a week ago so it wasn’t much of a wait for me but yes I’m happy to read Wayfarer and complete a series before I have time to procrastinate reading it like what happens to a lot when I read series.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Release Date: January 31st 2017

I don’t know too much about this one other than its been getting really good reviews and sounds whimsical and captivating. What more could you want from a book? Also the cover is gorgeous.

Kings Cage by Victoria Aveyard

Release Date: February 7th 2017

I’ve obviously read both Red Queen and Glass Sword and they were both solid 4 star reads for me so I can’t wait to continue the series!

The Upside Of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Release Date: April 11th 2017

Wow, where to even begin with this one. I’m sad I didn’t get an arc of it but it too has been getting amazing reviews but I didn’t expect anything less? Becky, along with writing my favourite contemporary in the whole world, Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, is also the nicest person ever and I will forever buy all her books.

A Court Of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

Release Date: May 2nd 2017

Does this one even need an explanation?

Always And Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

Release Date: May 2nd 2017

I don’t know if it’s just me but I thought this series was only a duology! But hey, I’m not complaining. I need more Lara, Kitty and the whole TATBILB clan in my life.

Untitled Superhero Trilogy Book by Marissa Meyer

*cover and title to be released*

Release Date: November 7th 2017

Marissa’s storytelling gets better and better as she releases books and after reading Heartless she could honestly release her grocery lists and I’d buy them. I’m sad it’s not another fairytale retelling but I’m sure this’ll be just as good.

That’s it for my 2017 anticipated releases, I know there’s many more but some are sequels to book is haven’t got to yet (many of those sitting on my shelf, staring at me, screaming “Emma, read me!”) but I’m sure I’ll get to them all sometime this year and then be able to join in on the release hype.

How about you guys? What’s your most anticipated 2017 release? Let me know in the comments!

My Top 6 Of 2016!

My Top 6 Of 2016!

Hello everyone, happy holidays and happy new year! This post is a little bit of a ‘year in review’ kind of post, and I’ll be sharing with you my top 6 books of 2016, some other honourable mentions, my reading goals for this coming year and also my blogging goals.

To start off, I read 60 new books this year, and two rereads. 60 books was my goodreads goal, and although I had a major slump in September/October, I still managed to pull through and meet my goal.

Out of the 60 books I didn’t actually have much trouble narrowing it down to 6 books, I don’t even know how I made a full list of 15 favourites at the end of 2015, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t read a lot of amazing books this year, I just think I’ve become pickier with which books I call my favourite and which I just enjoyed a lot. Also, all of the books in my top 6 were 5 star reads for me.

Number 6 on my list is Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin Manuel Miranda and Jeremy Carter.

I know, this isn’t your typical novel but with my Hamilton obsession that took over my life early 2016, this satisfied my Hamilton needs more than ever. Whether it was Lin’s hilarious notes on the lyrics or reading the backstory on how the show all came together, this book had me laughing and crying throughout every page.

Number 5 on my list is Milk & Honey by Rupi Kaur.

I slowly jumped down the hole of poetry in the fall and out of the many collections I’ve read, this one was the first, and the one that left the largest impression on me. No matter what poetry collection I’ve read since, my mind always wanders back to this one. I also found that a lot of other collections are pointless, or don’t have too meaningful of a message to them but Milk & Honey was deep and important and I cannot recommend it enough to everyone, it’s just so eye opening and beautiful.

Number 4 on my list is Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone.

It’s been months since I read this but I can still remember the day this book tore my heart out in one mere second. I was in English class and we had time to read and (if you’ve read this you probably know what part I’m talking about) I just GASPED so loud, and everyone turned to look at me but honestly this book had me shook I had to keep from crying the rest of the class it was so damn good. I also had, and still have a hard time finding really good contemporaries now that I have read so many of them and have such high expectations and this one actually blew my mind, 10/10 would recommend hahaha.

Number 3 on my list is Passenger by Alexandra Bracken.

This is an extremely recent read but it’s been on my shelf for over six months and I don’t know how I didn’t read it until now. I didn’t know it had a history aspect to it and I love history so picking this up a couple of weeks ago surprised me so much because I don’t understand how I let it sit on my shelf for so long when it seemed as though it was written for my exact needs in a good book. But overall the plot, characters, writing was all an A+ for me and I bought the sequel a few days ago already because my local bookstore is the actual best for putting books out early so we all know Wayfarer will be my first book of 2017.

Number 2 on my list is technically two books but, A Court Of Thorns And Roses and A Court Of Mist And Fury by Sarah J. Maas.

Wow, where to even begin with these two. I read these both in May and having not read any Sarah J. Maas before, I was completely blown away. These both definitely reignited my love for fantasy but also made me realize my love for retellings. You don’t even know how funny I looked for a few days carrying a book as big as ACOMAF from class to class everyday, it was a big one hahaha. We also all know that I will probably have a heart attack the second A Court Of Wings And Ruin is in my hands.

And last but not least, number 1 on my list, for 2016, and my whole life is The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak.

I have never had an absolute favourite book before, when people asked me what it was I would always just say Harry Potter (which is still my favourite series, don’t worry) but wow the second I closed The Book Thief I knew that I’d be thinking about this book for the rest of my life. Even if this isn’t your favourite book, it’s so important, heartbreaking and beautiful written that everyone was read it can see how incredible it is. I would link my review but it’s months old and was written through the tears this book caused me, but trust me, give this book a read, you won’t regret it. From the amazing and loveable charaters, that you get to know so well, to the plot, message and phenomenonal writing, The Book Thief is perfect, I don’t know how else to put it, there is a big imprint of this book on my heart and I don’t go a day without glaring at my shelf, seeing it and remembering how important it is to me and in general.

Honourable Mentions:

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, beautiful and heartbreaking, a perfect quick read that isn’t pointless whatsoever. Wow I need to see this movie.

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevive Tuckolke, unique and strange but awesome.

Salt To The Sea by Ruta Sepetys, another historical fiction that was gripping and quick, with great characters.

Fantastic Beasts and The Cursed Child, how could I not mention these? Even though The Cursed Child was judged pretty harshly these both filled the empty Wizarding World void in my heart that’s been there since Deathly Hallows Pt 2.

Overall I had a great reading year, I read so many different genres of books, read many which have sequels coming out in 2017 that I’m looking forward to and read my favourite book ever.

If you want to check out the rest of the books I read in 2016, click here to check me out on goodreads!

Now for my 2017 reading goals, I’m aiming for 60 books again because I feel like it was a good challenge for me but also manageable, it evens out to 5 books a month which doesn’t always happen because of school and life but with the extra reading in summer and on breaks, I can do it.

I also want to continue to read a bunch of different genres which I did a good job of last year and want to continue with.

As for blogging I know I haven’t done a very good job of it these past three months or so but my goal for the new year is to have at least one post up a week. I know I’ll have more that that up after January is done because I have exams at the end of January, and this semester has been very hard, hence the limited posts, but once it’s all done and over with I’ll be all set because my second semester is so easy, I’ll have minimal to no homework, and more time to read and blog. I also want to get back into reviewing the books I read. I don’t think I’ve written a review for a book since the summer and that’s horrible so I need to get back in the swing of that for sure. And lastly I want to get back into monthly wrap up and hauls because 1) they are fun and 2) they are nice to look back at because even if I don’t write a review for every book I can go back and get a little taste of my thoughts shortly after reading the book.

That’s all for this yearly wrap up/top 6 of 2016 post, it got quite longer than anticipated but oh well.

Did you all have a good reading year? What’s the best book you read in 2017 and what’s your most anticipated read for 2017? Let me know in the comments!
