Two days ago the trailer was released for the upcoming adaption of the YA contemporary, Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon (which most of you have probably heard of and/or read). I thought I’d do a little reaction-type post about my thoughts on the trailer, casting etc.

I knew that Everything, Everything was being made into a movie but I didn’t know it was this far into production! I thought they only had Amandla cast as the main charater but then suddenly there was a trailer released!

And as my frequent readers would know from the review I did a while ago on the book, I didn’t hate it and enjoyed the diversity of the story but the insta-love and unrealisticness made it a 3 star read for me and I think that is about where the movie will stand with me too.


I think the casting was perfect, for everyone.

And by the trailer it looks like it’ll be pretty faithful to the book, there’s no big plot changes visible to us so it’ll most likely be a true adaptation. Although her house and bedroom looked very modern and not at all how I pictured it but I guess that is something that comes along with movie adaptations.

My big (well I wouldn’t say big, but what bothered me) problem was I felt as though the trailer spoiled the whole book! And I don’t know if it’s just me but it gave away the whole story I feel like I don’t even need to go see it! It showed her in her house, not being able to leave, meeting Olly, Maria getting fired, leaving and collapsing. That’s the whole damn book except the last bit. 

As I said, I don’t know if it’s just me or if anyone else feels this way too, but let me know in the comments so I don’t feel alone! Also, did you have any other thoughts about the trailer? I’d love to chat about it!

  1. I’ve heard both good and bad things about the book, so I’m a little wary of it. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get around to reading it (because I want my books to be A+), but if people thought it was good enough to make a movie, maybe I’ll read it sometime soon??? IDK. 😛

    1. It’s super light and cute (minus the issues I had) I would suggest reading it in the summer when you are just in the mood for a contemporary 😀

I haven’t read the book, but one thing I’m not sure how I feel about is casting Amandla in this movie (even though she’s an amazing actress and I think she’s great) and apparently also in The Hate U Give (according to it’s Goodreads page) because I feel like she is becoming the Token Black Girl of YA book-to-movie adaptations. I’m hoping the way she handles roles like this can help break that chain, but that’s my own two cents about how the movie will pan out.

    2. Oh really ??? I didn’t know she had been cast for that movie TOO !!! 😦 hopefully they give some other POC actors a chance for all these movies

  4. That’s what I thought, too. I was super excited about the casting, and I had no idea the movie was done filming. BAM! Movie trailer. I think the trailer spoiled a lot of the book, which, sadly, makes sense because those were the best parts of the book and would make for the best cinematography and audience hook. I wish they had kept it a bit… less? I guess. I would have liked for them to leave more than just one surprise.

  5. Totally agree about the casting choices, I think they are perfect! But I must agree that trailer unfortunately does give a lot of the book away. Still excited to go and watch it 💞🌸😊

  6. I was wondering about the trailer being spoilery. I stopped watching halfway through because I felt like I was being spoiled on everything and still haven’t decided if I’ll get around to reading the book.
    Contemporaries aren’t really my cup of tea. Whenever I try to read novel length ones they tend to take me forever, even if they’re really short for some reason, but I keep trying them every so often in the hopes that one day I’ll find the contemporary novel to change my ways. Hasn’t happened yet, but we’ll see.

    1. I actually would suggest Everything, Everything is you don’t normally read contemporaries/have hard time getting through them. There’s scattered book reviews and texts throughout the book that I think would keep you from getting bored. Good call on not watching the whole trailers. It’s like a goodreads review WITHOUT the spoilers indicator on 😦

      1. Maybe I will give Everything, Everything a try then. I don’t know though. I like long fantasy/sci-fi novels and in those non-conventional things like text messages tend to annoy me. The few contemporaries I’ve read and adored usually border on magical realism. We’ll see . . .
